The Chair of Information Systems and Strategic IT Management (SITM) is proud to welcome experienced professionals from the US, Japan, and Germany to a guest lecture session to be held on Tuesday, 31.01.2017 on the topic “Organizational Behavior: Perspectives from different cultures.”

The session will be a combination of a classroom and virtual session, with the three guest lecturers sharing their knowledge and experience, after which question will be answered.

Mr. Marcel Groß, a German, is a Service Manager B2B at E-Plus Mobilfunk GmbH. He studied Information Systems at the FOM in Essen. He has years of experience at IT/Telco companies with a multicultural working environment. 

Title: “Service Management with the support of a psychology tool like MBTI”

Abstract: The assessment of customer types improves our understanding of the customer and can support service management work. 

A brief look at service management’s daily business and some examples of an approach based on the customer’s personality will be presented.

Mr. Joe Cooper, an American, is a seasoned speaker and a project, program, and portfolio management consultant at Allegient - LLC, Indianapolis, USA. He studied Laser Physics at the Graduate School of Oklahoma State University and earned BS degrees in Physics, Mathematics, and Professional Pilot Technology from Indiana State University. He has years of experience as an IT project/portfolio manager. He will elaborate on emotional intelligence and how it impacts IT project team cohesiveness.

Title: “Improving Team Results with Emotional Intelligence”

Abstract: Members of teams with high emotional intelligence (EI) have faster cohesion, perform more effectively in a shorter time, are more satisfied with team communication, and receive more social support from each other. Leaders with high EI have greater sensitivity and empathy, and are rated as more effective leaders by direct reports and superiors. IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tends to remain about the same over time. However, emotional intelligence can improve over time. Understanding emotional intelligence is the first step toward improvement. This presentation will cover the key skills to help you gain a better understanding of this important competency.

Prof. Tetsuya Toma, a Japanese, teaches at the Graduate School of System Design and Management of Keio University, Japan. He worked for 20 years before being appointed professor. He will talk about some of his previous projects and the organizational culture of the places where he worked. 

Title: “Understanding Japanese People”

Abstract: Based on the lecturer’s experience of living and working in two countries, Japan and the United States of America, he discusses the organizational behaviour of Japanese people compared to that of people in the US. The talk includes the differences in their social position, organization, personal values, trust building, business attitudes, and so on. In addition, he touches on why Japanese people speak little English, although they study English from the age of 12, providing some background of the grammatical differences between the languages and the lack of opportunity to speak English. We then discuss which behaviour is closer to that of German people.
