SITM supports the digitalization of the city of Essen

In the context of the initiative CONNECTED.ESSEN, the Chair of Information Systems and Strategic IT Management is cooperating with the Center for Logistics and Transport (ZLV) and the Networked Embedded Systems Group (NES) to develop the city of Essen into a Smart City. On behalf of the Essener Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (EVV) and the City of Essen, the chair undertook a survey of the current digitalization projects and key actors in Essen and conducted numerous interviews with the relevant stakeholders. At the same time, other cities’ best practices and examples were examined in order to optimally support the transformation of Essen into a Smart City. On June 14, the results will be presented to the city and business representatives in the form of, among other things, a "digital map" at the Messe Essen.

The aim of the overall initiative CONNECTED.ESSEN is to use the city of Essen’s digitalization to increase the quality of life of all of Essen’s inhabitants, to increase the city’s economic attractiveness, and to improve its sustainability.

The project results have also been incorporated into the City of Essen’s application to be recognized as a Smart City model municipality within the funding call "Modellprojekte Smart Cities: Stadtentwicklung und Digitalisierung" for which the Federal Ministry of the Interior is making a total of 750 million euros available.
